This is a perfect choice for driving out into the desert and experiencing another beautiful nature spot. The coolness of the air with large Fichus shade trees, breezes and cold water these areas can be very refreshing. Pack a small picnic, wear your bathing suit under light clothing, and bring walking shoes.
From the airport in San Jose, continue heading north on Highway 1 for about 45-60 minutes to Santiago. Take the Santiago exit and head west. Before you enter the town square, take a right on the road just before the square. At the end the road, turns to dirt, and you will need to turn left following signs that direct you all the way to Cascada Sol del Mayo. This will be dirt road for about 15 minutes and when you arrive at the parking lot there will be an attendant who will charge you a nominal entry fee of about $10 per person. You will need to walk on a basic trail until you descend to the falls about 10-15 minutes in total.
Small waterfall but beautiful fresh pools to take a dip – find a sandy spot or a flat rock to lay out on and enjoy your picnic!
