Hummingbirds are known for their swift flight and energetic lives. This high speed and constant motion – their hearts beat 250 times per minute – require great reserves of energy that the birds get from nectar, their primary source of food. Their metabolism is so high that they have to visit hundreds of flowers every day. When a hummingbird stops to feed, it appears breathtakingly still when, in reality, its wings are moving so rapidly (up to 70 times/second) that it is virtually impossible for the human eye to see.
This appearance of stillness and calm amid intense speed and movement is what appealed so strongly to us as it seemed the perfect metaphor of how life exists for many of us today. At the same time, it was also the perfect name to attach to our dream of creating a natural escape that could be a source of nourishment, fulfillment and reward.
During the waiting process of finding the perfect East Cape property, when we would find ourselves mired in doubt or indecision, it was amazing how many times one of these tiny, colorful miracles of nature would suddenly appear and, it seemed, stay long enough to tell us to not give up. It was as if God Himself was using these beautiful little birds to keep us focused and moving forward.
For us, there was never any doubt as to what we would call our boutique beach retreat. El Colibri was our way of recognizing the small but mighty hummingbird while also providing a natural escape for those needing a break from the busyness of life.
Hummingbirds open our eyes to the wonders of the world and inspire us to open our hearts to those around us.
